- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for filling)
- 3 cloves garlic, finely minced
- 2 tbsp chopped fresh herbs (thyme, parsley, or rosemary)
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 large egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp water (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a bowl and let sit for 10 minutes until foamy.
- Add eggs, softened butter, flour, and salt. Knead until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.
- While dough rises, melt butter in a pan, add garlic, and cook 2 minutes. Stir in chopped herbs and set aside.
- Roll risen dough into a large rectangle on a floured surface. Brush with garlic herb butter and sprinkle mozzarella evenly.
- Roll the dough into a log. Slice it lengthwise and twist the halves with the cut sides facing up.
- Place in a greased pan. Let rise for 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush with egg wash and bake for 35–40 minutes.
- Cool for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
Notes
- For even more flavor, add a sprinkle of Parmesan before baking.
- Always let the bread cool slightly before slicing for clean layers.
- If using dried herbs, reduce quantity to 2 tsp total.
