Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (or brown sugar)
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract (or vanilla bean paste)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or nutmeg)
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Cut the bread into thick slices and arrange in a greased baking dish.
  2. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl until well combined.
  3. Pour custard over the bread slices, pressing gently to soak. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or overnight.
  4. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  5. Bake for 25–30 minutes until top is golden and custard set. Broil 2–3 minutes for a crispier top if desired.
  6. Sprinkle sugar on top and use a kitchen torch or broiler to caramelize until crispy.
  7. Cool slightly and serve with fresh berries, powdered sugar, and maple syrup if desired.
