Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions is a quick and savory stir-fry featuring tender slices of beef, colorful bell peppers, and onions in a flavorful soy-oyster sauce. Perfect over steamed rice for a classic Chinese-style dinner at home.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes
  • Yield: 23 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb (450 g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil, divided
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • 1/2 cup beef broth or water
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper (freshly ground, for extra flavor)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Cooked rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine beef slices with soy sauce, oyster sauce, and cornstarch. Mix well and let sit 10–15 minutes.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add beef in a single layer and sear 2–3 minutes until browned. Remove beef and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add remaining 1 tbsp oil. Sauté onions, green bell pepper, and red bell pepper for 3–4 minutes until slightly tender. Add garlic and ginger; cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  4. Return beef to the skillet. Add beef broth and black pepper; stir to combine. Cook 2–3 minutes until sauce thickens slightly and beef is cooked through. Adjust salt if needed.
  5. Serve hot over cooked rice for a classic Chinese-style meal.

Notes

  • Marinating the beef slightly helps tenderize it and enhances flavor.
  • Use a high heat to quickly sear the beef for best texture.
  • Add more vegetables like snow peas or carrots for extra color and nutrition.
